Tangerine "Creamsicle" Ice Cream

Tangerine "Creamsicle" Ice Cream %The Baker Chick

The weather for the last few days in New York has been miserable. Rainy, cold and even a bit of snow yesterday. Like everyone else in this city, I am just dying for some sunshine and warmth. Spring should have sprung by now so where is it!? I thought that making a summery ice cream would pull me out of my rainy-day blues. And it worked!

I got this ice cream maker earlier this week and I am already SO excited for the possibilities.  I was a little worried that come summer I would never feel like baking with it already so hot out, but with this puppy I know I’ll always be able to crank up a cool delicious treat. The maker I got was under $30, easy to use, and in my opinion such an important thing to have in the kitchen. I really recommend getting one! You”ll never buy ice cream again!

Along with the machine I ordered a copy of “The Perfect Scoop” by David Lebovitz. I have heard such amazing things about it and it truly is a great resource. I adapted this recipe from one I found there. It called for oranges, but I chose to use honey tangerines instead. I was really happy with my first Ice Cream attempt. It reminds me of my favorite Ice Cream Man confection- The Creamsicle. a tangy orange popsicle with a creamy ice cream center. For a minute I felt like I was running across the lawn barefoot with sticky hands and a grin.

Tangerine "Creamsicle" Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • grated zest of 3 tangerines (preferably un-sprayed)
  • 1 1/4 cups fresh squeezed tangerine juice (Took me 3 juicy large tangerines to yield this much)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 2 teaspoons Grand Marnier (I didn't have this so I omitted it)

Instructions

  1. In a food processor or blender, pulverize the sugar and the zest until the zest is very fine. Add the orange juice, sour cream, half-and-half and liqueor and blend until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Chill thoroughly and then process in your ice cream maker per it's instructions. (I chilled mine for about an hour before running it through the machine. Worked fine!)
