This and That

Happy Friday!! It’s gross and rainy today and I unfortunately don’t have a new recipe to share. Today’s nastiness was preceded by a couple perfect days and I wanted to be outside more than I wanted to be in the kitchen. That paired with feeling a bit under the weather means you’re getting random updates today instead! :)

I’ve been meaning to do a “Life lately on Instagram” post for awhile and I’m pairing it with a little update on some new features on the blog that my wonderful designer Shay has put into place!

Two pretty spring moments in NYC. That second pic is near the Resivoir at Central Park- so picturesque.

My dear talented friend Laura has been nominated for a TONY for her performance in Cinderella on B’way!! On the left- our friend Natalie and I took her out for Fro-yo on her nomination day. (It’s become a tradition.) On the right- in the dressing room after the show with my mama and sisters.

Here are a couple DIY projects I’ve attempted lately- on the left- a re-finished and distressed those chairs- I love the pop of color. On the right- I ordered some of my instagram pics and made a little clip on collage thing. It gives our guest room a nice touch huh?

And for the blog updates- notice that I have a new bar on the top of the screen making it an easy reminder to sign up for my email newsletter! In the top menu bar- you can see that I’ve added a “Recipe Box” tab which is for all you Ziplist users! Also- I’ve added buttons to connect with me on Instagram and Google+!

You will also notice a footer that we added with my instagram feed as well as some popular posts. Fresh and new!!

Have a wonderful weekend folks! :)

Food Blog Forum Orlando- a quick recap!

Food Blog Forum Orlando a quick recap! via The Baker Chick

I had the most wonderful time in Orlando last weekend at the Food Blog Forum. It was inspirational, fun, (delicious) and great way to meet so many food blogger friends I’ve been chatting with online for ages.

One of the cool things we learned about in Todd & Diane’s talk- was how to easily make free videos for our blogs using a great website called Animoto. Well- I decided to hit the ground running and made a little video for you with some trip highlights. (You may recognize some wonderful other bloggers in these pics!)

Thank you Scott & Jaden, Todd & Diane, Lindsay & Julie for all the work you put into this wonderful event. I can’t wait for next year!

It’s taking me longer than expected to get back into the kitchen groove. I should have something for you on Friday though!

King Arthur Flour Blog & Bake™

King Arthur Flour Blog & Bake™ via The Baker Chick Happy Derby Day! Before I start sharing all my wonderful experiences at King Arthur Flour Blog & Bake™ last week- one quick very cool thing! I filmed a video for ABC News making these cupcakes! Check it out! :)

Ok! I’ve finally had time to edit the hundreds of photos I took while at King Arthur Flour Vermont last week and I’m ready to share some. We did a lot of really cool things over the 3 days I spent up in Vermont, but the time we spent in the baking classroom was by far my favorite. I so enjoyed walking in and seeing my station set up so cute with an apron and all the ingredients/recipes I’d need for the day. King Arthur Flour Blog & Bake™ via The Baker Chick

The Book Worm part 2.

I know I know, it’s been awhile since the last installation of this little series, but with all the pictures from Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome, I felt like the blog had enough non-food related posts for a few weeks. BUT- that’s all done with and I have two more of my all time favorite reads to share with you. I loved the great discussion we had last time with so many wonderful suggestions from everyone- keep them coming! The Book Worm part 2. via The Baker Chick

Rome

Ok- I swear this is the last time I’m posting pics from Europe instead of food. (Well- maybe I shouldn’t promise that- I mean ideally I get to go to Europe again right?) It seems like ages have passed since we were in Rome, even though it was just a few weeks ago. Why do vacation days go by so fast and yet non vacation days go on and on?

Anyway, I loved Rome. The history gave me goosebumps, the food was the best I’ve ever had, and we stayed at a dreamy hotel that made leaving extra hard.

Sometimes when I see sights that are so full of history (like the Colosseum and really all of Ancient Rome,) I almost get a little teary. It’s just so magical to imagine all the millions of people who have seen that same thing for so many years. Rome via The Baker Chick

Florence

Oh Florence….by far my favorite of the four cities we visited on our Europe trip. What was it about Florence- the beauty at every turn? the fact that every meal we had there was to die for?  the easy to navigate streets which made getting around easy as can be? (unlike the labarynth of a city that was Venice.) Man oh man did we love it. This is definitely a city worth visiting again as we barely scratched the surface. We’re thinking a venture into the Tuscan hills would be perfect for next time… Florence via The Baker Chick

Are you guys sick of seeing trip pictures yet? I sure hope not because I still have 2 more cities we visited on our trip to share with you. I know you’re probably here for the recipes though- so you can expect plenty of those very soon. Meanwhile, here’s a little peek at our days in dreamy Venice. Venice via The Baker Chick

Paris

Thank goodness for jetlag that allows me to be awake at 5 AM starting this post! (It’s 11 AM Europe time after all.) We got back last night from 12 amazing days of sightseeing in Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome. It was such a whirlwind of planes, trains, and hotels, and doing this recap for you is really going to help me document and remember my time in each city. It is going to take me a few days to get back into the swing of things baking wise- but I hope to be back to my normal schedule by the middle of next week. In the meantime- I hope you don’t mind me sharing some highlights from the trip! Lets start with the first installment of our time in Paris!

 Paris via The Baker Chick

Our first day in Paris was a bit rough, as we arrived at 8 AM Paris time and didn’t sleep much on the plane, we were pretty sleepy and out of it all day. We did however make our way to the beautiful and iconic Notre Dame cathedral. It was truly breathtaking- I couldn’t get over all the detailing on the towers. Paris via The Baker Chick

Behind the Blog- The Book Worm

I’m trying something new today you guys. After years of friends and family always asking me about my book suggestions, (and celebrating my own book club’s 4 year anniversary,) I thought it was time to share what I’m reading with you too. (I always get a bit nervous about non-food related posts, so if you hate this and feel free to let me know. On the other hand- if this is something you’d enjoy as a monthly post- I’d love that feedback too!)

I read a lot.  I’d say I average a book a week and sometimes more. I’ve been a book worm for as long as I can remember, so much so, that as a kid my Mom would take my books away as punishment. (How could she?) Books have always been my favorite hobby, especially when I find a book I can just get lost in, anxiously awaiting when I get cuddle up in bed and devour a book I just can’t put down. Today I’m suggesting 2 books. One that I just read, and one that I’ve loved for years.
